Art Basel Qatar

5 February - 7 February, 2025

An immersive solo exhibition by contemporary Saudi artist Lina Gazzaz, delving into the profound interplay of nature, memory, and human intervention. Using delicate organic forms—palm leaves—as her primary medium, the exhibition captures the passage of time and the transformation of natural elements into evocative human artifacts.

The works trace lines of growth, highlighting the intricate anatomy of palms and their cell longevity, mirroring humanity’s journey of existence and resilience. Inspired by the palms’ profound symbolism in ancient civilization, holy books and methodology, where they represent productivity and victory, the pieces weave narratives that connect the natural and the spiritual. Lina employs fine red threads to narrate the continuity of growth, each line embodying a different dimension to existence—balance and fragility interwoven with strength and transformation.

Through a meditative dialogue between the artist and the leaf, the pieces reveal a spectrum of continuities, tensions, and deformations. Subtle folds, shrivels and compressions along the leaf’s surface and volume are brought into focus, transforming the natural form into compositions that evoke the essence of archaic musical instruments and imaginative creatures. Simultaneously, the flowing textures suggest a dynamic bodily movement, imbuing the works with vitality and rhythm. Each leaf becomes a symbol of time’s passage, bearing the imprints of memory as it transitions into an artifact shaped by human touch.

The exhibition offers a poetic dialogue between nature’s organic rhythms and humanity’s creative instincts, inviting viewers to reflect on the enduring relationship between the natural and the human, and the sacred symbolism of palms as a testament to humanity’s evolving story.
